New Guiness Bullwhip Record
Two whip crackers shattered a current world record in front of a
festival audience in an old-fashioned head-to-head contest on Sept. 17.
Whipmaker Adam Winrich emerged triumphant from the encounter, setting
a new Guinness World Record for "Most Bullwhip Cracks in One Minute"
by cracking a 6-foot bullwhip 261 times at the Spirit of the West
Festival in Sioux Falls, SD.
The contest was sponsored by two-time Guinness World Record holder
Robert Dante, who cracks whips professionally with his partner Tina at
Wild West events and cabarets.
Winrich vied for the title with Mike Woolridge of Florida, who cracked
his whip 228 times, breaking the previous record of 222 cracks held by
Chris Camp of Illinois
"They both did superbly," Dante said. "Winrich's performance raises
the bar into the stratosphere, and I think this is a world record that
will stand for some time."
Winrich won a prize package which included a 5-foot red nylon
snakewhip by Coyote Whips, and both competitors won Pecard's leather
conditioning kits for their whips. Ironically, Winrich made the
bullwhip used by Woolridge in his own performance.
The 4th Annual Spirit of the West Festival featured performances by
The Saddle Tramps, Woolridge, Buffalo Bill, Dante's Bullwhips, Edgar
Clemens, the Can Can Dancers, Brule, and Taco John's Whiplash the
Cowboy Monkey.
The three-day gathering included many Western vendors, mounted gun
contests and fast-draw competitions, reenactors' groups, chuck wagons
and Dutch oven contests.
Event organizers Jeanne and Bill Pattison announced that the Spirit of
the West Festival has been chosen by South Dakota Tourism as the 2005
Special Event for the Shoulder Season which will be promoted in the
September/October issues of Better Homes and Gardens, Country Home,
Ladies Home Journal, and Midwest Living.
