At the 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair the legendary Mexican charro "Vicente Orepeza", billed as the "greatest roper in the world" introduced trick and fancy roping to North America and to the world. Also sharing this skill were Mexican Vaqueros (charros/cowboys) that migrated "north of the border" and influenced the west. This northern invasion of roping catapulted this skill and talent into wild west shows and rodeos. Trick and fancy roping became intricately involved in the making of the cowboy legend and resulted as on of his trademarks.

Helping to create this cowboy legend was "Oklahoma's favorite son" Will Rogers: an accomplished roper, humorist, and philosopher. He was one of the great "lariat throwers" of his day and displayed his roping in wild west shows, rodeos, movies, and vaudeville. The complexity and artistry of his roping skills with its astonishing grace and timing has influenced many a rope throwing cowboy throughout the decades.

Cowboy Mike is one of those cowboys who has been influenced by Will Rogers. In "Stairway to Stardom" (1963} Mike was billed as SHADES OF WILL ROGERS. Cowboy Mike's timing and skill giving rise to complex maneuvers is a highlight of his performances and often leaves his audiences spellbound.
